Really interesting video! Sure, there’s a lot of what I suspected or already knew (“bottled” doesn’t mean better, and tons of useless plastic is being manufactured and then thrown in dumps for this needless industry). But storyofbottledwater.org did an excellent job of going behind the psychological economic games the industry has been playing for decades.
One could accuse them of being your standard anti-“culture of fear” liberal propagandists themselves, but hey, I like the message so I’m not going to complain. I wish they’d done more name-calling than saying one Pepsi chairman said “Our biggest enemy is tap water.” That would be Robert S. Morrison, apparently in this documentary “Tapped” which I’ve already saved to my Netflix queue. But I also understand their need to be concise. It is after all a springboard, and an effective one that got me wanting to know more.
One final note: Could we please sic someone on the designer reusable container fascists? I realize they’re not peddling disposable products and ergo not nearly as evil as the bottled water industry, but I’m a little bit tired of being told what to drink out of after making the smart decision to drink tap water. I was the last kid on the block to get Nalgene (a good couple months before everyone told me those toxic BPAs were going to kill me) and I still haven’t picked up a Sigg bottle. Last I recall drinking out of metal wasn’t completely safe either. I think I’ll just stick with refilling my thermos and the glasses in my kitchen while the container trends continue to duke it out.
well said dear natalie, well said:
the story of bottled water, & how it’s just another bullshit way corporations kick us in the balls and rape our environment.
I grew up drinking Lake Michigan (tap) water. I refuse to buy bottles unless its the only option and I’m desperate. Then I reuse the bottle, filling it with, you guessed it, tap water. But still… all that plastic, all that waste. Its so ridiculous.
